A mermaid is a mythological aquatic creature with a human head and torso and the tail of an aquatic animal such as a fish. The word is a compound of mere, the Old English word for “sea,” and maid, a woman. The male equivalent is a merman, however the term mermaid is sometimes used for males. Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures, typically depicted without clothing.
Much like sirens, mermaids would sometimes sing to people and gods and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or run their ships aground. Other stories have them squeezing the life out of drowning men while attempting to rescue them. They are also said to take humans down to their underwater kingdoms. In Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid it is said that they forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while others say they drown men out of spite.
The sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as mermaid-like; in fact, some languages use the same word for both bird and fish creatures, such as the Maltese word ’sirena’. Other related types of mythical or legendary creatures are water fairies (e.g. various water nymphs) and selkies, animals that can transform themselves from seals to humans.

Naval Support Facility Thurmont, popularly known as Camp David, is a mountain based military camp in Frederick County, Maryland used as a country retreat and for high alert protection of the President of the United States and his guests.

First known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was originally built as a camp for federal government employees and their families, by the WPA, starting in 1935, opening in 1938. In 1942 it was converted to a presidential retreat by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and renamed U.S.S. Shangri-La. Camp David received its present name from Dwight Eisenhower, in honor of his grandson, Dwight David Eisenhower II.

The camp is very isolated and quiet. The compound consists of several cabins hidden throughout the woods, connected only by small mulch walking paths. These cabins are all named after various trees, plants, and flowers. There is only one main road on the compound, essentially cutting the camp in two parts: one side in which the Marines and Naval personnel live, eat and train; and the other side consisting of all the guest cabins and presidential recreational facilites.

65 Roses Day 2009, which falls on Friday 29 May, is the annual national awareness day for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in Australia.

This special day was named after the folklore story of a little boy who could not pronounce his sister’s condition, Cystic Fibrosis, and instead called it “65 Roses”.

On 65 Roses Day, and in fact throughout all of May, the Cystic Fibrosis community, general public, national sponsor LJ Hooker and retailer BIG W will be raising much needed funds and awareness by selling 65 Roses merchandise.

Joels Story

Joel is a little boy living with Cystic Fibrosis. “Joel’s Story” shows how Cystic Fibrosis affects the lives of those living with this condition. Cystic Fibrosis is a recessive genetic condition which seriously affects breathing and digestion and ultimately shortens life itself.   As yet there is no cure - but with help we hope to one day find a cure.

Why 65 Roses?

“65 Roses” comes from the folklore story of a little boy’s effort to pronounce his sister’s condition; Cystic Fibrosis. Instead he called it “65 Roses”.

The rose is the national symbol of Cystic Fibrosis. Roses are often considered the ultimate expression of natural beauty, their magnificent bloom and fragrance, juxtaposed on a thorny stem, have captured imaginations for centuries. As a living thing roses can endure harsh conditions, but flourish with care and attention.

Many parallels can be drawn between the rose and a person with CF. The condition Cystic Fibrosis imposes harsh conditions on the lives of those who suffer with it, yet there is a resilience and charm about each person as a result of their struggle and connection with the beauty of life.

For these reasons the red rose has been adopted as the national symbol for Cystic Fibrosis in Australia.

On her opening night in The Prince of the Pagodas playing the part of Rose, she made history as the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal. In 1990 she received the Evening Standard Ballet Award and the Variety Club Award for Most Promising Newcomer. In 1995 she was awarded an OBE.

This rose is named “blue moon” they call this rose blue but there is not a true blue rose in nature,

the rose growers are still trying to cross breed a rose to be a true blue, as the saying goes ” once in a blue moon”.

This has proven difficult as the gene that produces blue in hard to recreate in a laboratory.

There are real reported instance of a blue moon. these are a few of the documented cases

1. The Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded in 1883, its dust turned sunsets green and the Moon blue all around the world for the best part of two years.
2. In 1927, the Indian monsoons were late arriving and the extra-long dry season blew up enough dust for a blue Moon.
3. Moons in northeastern North America turned blue in 1951 when huge forest fires in western Canada threw smoke particles up into the sky.

The myth about a blue moon has been around for many years, as early as the 15th century people were reported as seeing a blue moon.

The origin of the expression “once in a blue moon ” is widely reported as coming from the second full moon of the calender month.

Trials have proven its hardiness in drought conditions, along with a total resistance to black spot. 80 cents from the sale of each plant will be donated to the McGrath Foundation to help continue the Foundation’s important work which includes placing breast care nurses in rural and regional Australia. Jane had seen this rose and was looking forward to it being released in her name before she passed away in June last year.
